The purpose of the scholarship program is to promote organ and tissue donation as an important social responsibility while assisting New Mexico youth with higher education. Currently over 800 New Mexicans await kidney, heart, liver, lung, pancreas and intestine transplants. Unfortunately, many will die before suitable organs and/or tissues become available. By increasing awareness of organ and tissue donation, we help others make an informed decision about registering to be an organ donor.

• High school senior attending a public, private school or home school in New Mexico.
• Have a grade point average of 2.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
• Intend to enroll in an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school.

1. Obtain and application from your grade level counselor and complete.
2. You may choose to write your essay on either of two topics:
a.) A Personal Story involving organ transplant or tissue donation.
b.) An Informative Essay on organ transplant or tissue donation.
3. All essays must be three pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. Times Roman font, plus a title page with applicant’s name, essay title and state if your essay is a personal or informative.

An impartial selection committee will evaluate each application and essay. Upon review of all applications, the final committee will select the winning essays for awards.
Awards will be sent to the institution the student plans to attend upon verification of enrollment. If the recipient has already been awarded a full scholarship, the award may be utilized for school related expenses (books, lab fees, etc.). Recipients will need to provide official transcripts and photo identification. Please feel free to make copies and distribute to teachers, counselors, and students. Also, please post in the teacher’s lounge, counseling offices, and websites.

We combine a chance to win scholarships with rehearsals and workshops to prepare young women for life after high school. We then host a showcase where the achievements of each girl are highlighted and their scholastic achievement, interview skills, talent, and public speaking ability are evaluated.

DYW is making available over $1.2 billion dollars nationally this year (there are colleges who even offer scholarships to young women just for participating). But whether they win a scholarship or not, every girl walks away with new skills that will serve her well after graduation.
